A common tactic used by applicants for Australian Research Council grants is to bring on board high-profile overseas collaborators to strengthen their application. Motivation: track record of research team weighs very heavily into the overall score of assessors. In 2015, one melbourne-based finance prof was awarded a $250,000 ARC grant largely on the strength of his collaborator's CV. Sure, the overseas collaborator had been dead for 9 months ... but I guess that's just a minor detail that didn't warrant a mention?
